Montreal Goddesses

This old photograph of a semi-naked woman was found in a jewellry store window on Monkland Avenue in Montreal. We had just had dinner with Laurence and Mary Hutchman at the St. Viateur Restaurant across the street; I had seen this photograph before but this was an opportunity to photograph it.

The Window at Natalie's Hat Shop on Decarie Boulevard, Montreal

The importance of this photo isn't evident in the photograph itself. Here it is: after my father died my mother purchased a new hat for the funeral at Natalie's Hat Shop facing Decarie Boulevard. The viewer couldn't have known this, which is, after all important to the reason why this photograph is included here. There is more to the story, including poems I wrote about the hat and what became of the hat. Also, that Natalie, the hat shop's owner, later lived at one of Hoolahan's flats on Oxford Avenue; in fact, she lived in the flat next to where we had formerly lived... so there is quite a bit of synchronisty to this.

Fairy Land, Montreal

Located on the west side of St. Francis Xavier, on the same block as the Centaur Theatre, between Notre Dame and St. Paul, this store sells or rents costumes. I am not too sure what the original name, "Fairy Land", refers to.

St. Hubert Street

The sidewalks on the several blocks of St. Hubert Street are covered, making it an attractive shopping district. This is the street in Montreal where brides' and bridesmaids' gowns, and just about everything else that is needed for a wedding, can be found in the dozens of stores lining both sides of this street. St. Hubert Street is a Temple to the Wedding, a street dedicated to the Feminine, to union, new beginnings, an affirmation of life, sexuality, and joie de vivre.
